Our Recycling Class recently took a trip to the Midland Recycling Center, and it was both fun and informative!
During our visit, students toured the recycling facility and learned how materials brought in can be transformed into new products. For example, plastic bags can be repurposed into decking materials, and plastic bottles can be turned into T-shirts. We also learned that local farmers melt plastic to wrap hay bales. The center gives around 600 tours each year, helping educate the community about sustainability. As one student shared, “They take care of the Earth and make it a better place.”
Afterward, we toured the landfill and saw how large machines with metal-spiked wheels continuously compact the trash. Layers of dirt are then added to reduce odors, prevent scavengers, and keep debris from blowing away.
It was a great hands-on learning experience that helped students better understand the importance of recycling and taking care of our environment! We also were able to recycle 1 ton of our industrial food cans from our kitchen at Farwell Schools.
