    ART COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

    All Art courses can cover the 1.0 visual performing arts credit.

    Introduction to Art

    This course instructs students on how to produce art using a wide variety of art making concepts and techniques in a full range of art media (including wet and dry, 2-d and 3-d).  In addition, art history and critical/aesthetic theory are learned and these ideas are explored through each individual’s art making experiences.

    Drawing I

    This course instructs students is on how to produce art using a wide variety of drawing techniques including but not limited to graphite, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, and mixed media.  Additionally, students explore many different styles and purposes of drawing from the fine art, to technical drawing, and illustration.

    Drawing II

    This course is a continuation of Drawing I.  It instructs students on how to produce art using a wide variety of drawing techniques including, but not limited to, graphite, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, and mixed media.

    Printmaking*

    Prerequisite:  Drawing I
    This course explores the different possibilities of water-based screen-printing in a professional print shop atmosphere. Students can gain a solid working knowledge of screen printing PLUS intaglio, linoleum and block printing, direct transfer, and mono printing. The course will include all traditional fine art print making techniques; blend art, applied science, applied math, and construction tech. Along with addition techniques such as outputting, mixing gradations with ink, and color process printing are demonstrated and employed. Through projects, demonstrations, and critiques, students will create a cohesive body of work and utilize print making skills for their own individual artistic growth.

    Studio Art

    This course allows students to expand their knowledge and skills on an individual basis through exploring media and techniques that interest and challenge them.  Students propose their own projects on a contractual basis and reflect upon their work, problem-solving process, and final product in a series of written critiques and reflections.

    Auto CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) will introduce students to the concepts of drafting and design.  Units of study will include mechanical, architectural, and package engineering using both 2D and 3D drawings. NOTE:  Students must maintain computer privileges according to the district’s acceptable use policy to successfully complete this course.

    Business Management and Technology I

    This course focuses on employability skills.  Students will create their own professional resume and letter of application.  Students will learn to tactfully give answers to the 64 Most Asked Interview Questions and be given tips for professional interviewing techniques and appropriate dress for an interview.  MS Word and MS Excel will be used to learn business applications in word processing and spreadsheet applications.  Students will also read “Seven Habits of Highly Effect Teens,” by Sean Covey to learn positive techniques for interacting will all personality types.     BEST FOCUS stands for “Business, Engineering, Science, and Technology – Fostering Opportunities, Cross-examination, Understanding, and Success.”  This course is designed to provide students an opportunity to explore a variety of career clusters related to business, engineering, science, and technology.  This transitional course allows students to explore career options and serves as both a feeder and as an enhancement to the CTE program.  In addition, it partners with local community and business leaders as well as post-secondary training institutions to provide students with a better understanding of the careers available in the 21st century.  NOTE:  Students must maintain computer privileges according to the district’s acceptable use policy to successfully complete this course.

    Computer Applications

    Work Based Learning Experience is a one-hour (or two-hour) class designed for seniors and juniors (by permission only) who are gaining work experience toward their career goal.  Students must have been or currently be enrolled in a related academic class that relates to their job and helps prepares the student for their career goal.  Students must have employment prior to enrolling in the class, and that employer must be willing to provide the school district with their carrier/policy numbers for worker’s disability and liability insurance.  Students are required to updated their EDP’s, pass Safety tests, write two essays per trimester, and complete weekly time sheets/journals in addition to their job.  Any student who does NOT meet the minimum hour requirement and/or terminates employment during the trimester will automatically not receive credit in the course.

    ENGLISH COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

    ELA/English 9

    9th Grade
    ELA/English 9 covers all three trimesters in 9th grade.  These courses are focused around learning and developing reading fluency and comprehension strategies.  Much of the focus will be using Reading Apprenticeship strategies.  ELA/English 9 is a basic survey course in which students will be exposed to many different genres of writing and literature.  The focus will be on the Common Core Standards.  Skills such as basic essay structure will be taught, along with reading comprehension strategies.  Much of the text that will be used will be non-fiction, or information text, along with a mixture of fiction.  Note:  Offered as traditional and team taught.

    English 10 A/B

    This course is an in-depth study of American Literature.  The focus will be on American Literature pieces, as well as composition skills.  Emphasis will be on both fiction and non-fiction, as well as the standard MLA Format essay.  The focus will be on the Common Core Standards.  Students will continue to build on essay structure and reading comprehension strategies.  Note:  Offered as traditional and team taught.

    This courses is an in-depth study composition and literature course focused on British literature.     English 12 is a senior level composition and literature course focused on preparing students for college level courses. Students will analyze texts, compose complex research and analysis papers, and critically engage with current social issues.  The focus remains on Common Core Standards.  Note:  Offered as traditional and team taught.

    Novels

    Grades 10-12
    This course has two primary goals: (1) for the student to become acquainted with real-life and mythology pieces of literature and (2) to become better readers, speakers, and writers. Novels can be taken more once as trimester content is divided between mythology and real-life novels. The course itself will include a class novel as well as a choice novel. Writing components are imbedded within the course.

    English (Yearbook/Newspaper)

    This is an Independent Study publications course where students are responsible for producing the high school newspaper, The Talon, and the school yearbook, The Eagle.  The fundamentals of writing, layout, and design are essential.  Students must be self-directed and independent learners. Computer skills are essential. Good attendance is a priority. Inter-personal communication skills and the ability to conduct face-to- face interviews are necessary to be successful in this course.

    MID ENG110 – Academic Writing

    Prerequisite:  Eligible for Dual Enrollment and Meet Placement Guidelines for Course
    This course is offered through Mid Michigan College on both Farwell’s campus and at both MID campuses.  It is meant to serve as a companion course to ENG 111, and will utilize the same goals and outcomes. However, ENG 110 is designed to provide incoming students a more gradual and more thorough introduction to the textual practices required in college (such as evidence, critical analysis, considering rival points of view, or synthesizing a new position). This course will focus on how to read, annotate, and respond to academic texts, and will also introduce students to writing strategies designed to make them successful academic writers.

    MID ENG111 – Freshmen English Composition

    Prerequisite:  Eligible for Dual Enrollment and Meet Placement Guidelines for Course
    This course prepares a student for academic writing in the college setting, and concentrates on analyzing and discussing written sources. Emphasis is on writing that shows insight into published discussions of an issue and understanding of the contexts of academic debate (rather than on informational reports or personal expression essays). In addition, research and revision are treated as integral parts of the process of writing an academically acceptable essay. By the end of the course, a student must show 'competency' in an academic portfolio of selected essays.

    Spanish 1  A/B*

    Currently, Hispanics are the largest minority in the United States and we are the third largest Spanish-speaking country in the world: being bilingual and bicultural is an important job skill.  In addition, Spanish is the second most important language in international business and is spoken by about 500 million people in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.  This course begins the study of Spanish language and culture by developing the communicative modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.  The study of cultural practices, history, and geography of Spanish-speaking peoples continues as students develop basic grammar structure, vocabulary, and conversational skills in the present tense.  Students will be expected to communicate on a variety of topics in Spanish and use English as infrequently as possible.  In addition, this course will strive to heighten the student’s bicultural awareness of the Hispanic cultures within the United States and around the world through textbook readings, music, supplemental materials, and the study of current events. 

    PLATO Spanish A/B

    For students who do not wish to earn their required foreign language credit through the traditional classroom experience, PLATO Spanish A/B is an option.  This course is for independent learners who are self-motivated to learn via the PLATO computer program.  Because it is self-paced, students can advance on their own.

    This course continues the study of the Spanish language by developing the communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) to the novice high level.     MID SPN102 – Elementary Spanish II

    Prerequisite:  Meet Dual Enrollment Guidelines and Completion of SPN101
    Spanish 102 is a continuation of SPN 101; therefore, it will begin with a review of the material covered in Spanish 101.  Students in Spanish 102 will continue the study of grammar and vocabulary and will use these to communicate utilizing speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills.  The course is designed to provide the basis for further study of Spanish at an intermediate level. Students are expected to study the material outside of class and come to class prepared to participate.

    An introductory Physical Education course where students learn basic fitness aspects with sports.  In PEI, students work on teamwork, sportsmanship, and the basic rules and strategies of various sport activities. 

    Conditioning & Training

    The goal is to provide an extended level of weight and agility/speed training to those athletes who enter the building with a working knowledge of athletics and plan on participating in interscholastic competition.  Three days per week will be strength training in the weight room facility while developing agility and speed through drills on the remaining two days.  Commitment is made on a daily basis to instruct the students on personal hygiene, appearance, attitude, and demeanor around teachers, parents, and classmates.  It is available as a one, two, or three trimester course.

    Women’s Fitness*

    Women’s Fitness is one of the physical education courses that could fill your P.E. requirement.  This class is for the teenage girl who wants to be healthier. Participation is a must! Through activities such as; aerobics, weight lifting, yoga, walks, stations, Zumba, and Tae Bo you will turn into a leaner healthier person.

    Recreational Activities

    Students will learn a variety of sport activities that have life long value.  These activities include both individual sports and team sports such as golf, archery, tennis, badminton, softball, basketball, and many other similar activities that go along with the fitness for life theme.  This course is available as a one, two, or three trimester course.

    This is an introductory class to woodworking.  Students will learn about tools and their uses and safety in the woodshop.  Students will get the chance to build several projects incorporating these tools.

    Outdoor Woods

    Prerequisite – Wood Tech or instructor permission.
    This woodshop class is slightly more advanced and focuses on building larger outdoor items and furniture.  Students get many hands-on opportunities and must be able to work well with others.

    Construction Tech*

    A more advanced class where students will learn how to build a house from the ground up.  Excavation, framing, roofing, and siding are several of the components discussed.  Students will build a scale model.

    Introduction to Design and Fabrication is a course that provides students with an opportunity to explore a variety of career clusters related to Engineering/Manufacturing, Business/Technology, and Visual Arts.  This transitional course allows students to explore career options and serves as both a feeder and as an enhancement to our CTE programs.  Students in this course will use cross curricular and interdisciplinary skills (art and design, math, science/technology, and woodworking/fabrication) to solve a series of design problems through innovation and fabrication of a solution.  Students will learn and exhibit the design process in order to formulate successful solutions and have exposure to 21st century manufacturing employment skills.  Through this course, students will expand on their existing math skills by budgeting the cost of projects; expanding their geometric skills in designing; and utilizing their knowledge of fractions in the creation of accurate drafts, scale models and prototypes.  Additionally, it is a goal of the course to give students opportunities to consider various career possibilities and work on projects to better the lives of the school and the community.

In addition, students will get hands-on experiences with sustainable tree cutting, sawmilling, stacking and drying lumber, and the overall development of the land.

    The Symphonic Band is to provide a large instrumental ensemble for students to experience all aspects relative to the performance of varying levels of band music.  New, as well as standard repertoire of artistic and educational natures, will be performed by this ensemble.  The Symphonic Band will also be called the Marching Band for any marching events and will actively perform at football games, marching invitationals and parades.  Members of the Symphonic Band will also make up the Pep Band for some of the home basketball games.  This will be on a volunteer basis.

    SAT Prep is designed to make students aware of and comfortable with the features and format of the SAT college entrance exam.  Students will learn test-taking strategies and time management skills.  All students will take the equivalent of at least four full-length sample SAT exams during the course of this class and record their progress.  They will review all of the math formulas, English grammar rules, scientific methods and models, and reading comprehension strategies using KHAN Academy and other practice materials.  Students will be graded on attendance, participation, and completion of exams and some practice material.

    CTE AIME – Advanced Manufacturing

    1st and 2nd Year Programs – Dual Enrolled
    Dual Enrolled Credit Earned in AIM100 (1 cr), IND101 (2cr), and AIM110 (2 cr) – 1st year.
    Dual Enrolled Credit Earned in IND102 (2 cr), IND140 (3 cr), - 2nd year plus work-based learning.
    Students learn basic industrial safety practices.  Topics include electrical, moving machinery, lifting, vision, hearing, overhead work, PPE, and proper cleanup investigation and documentation.  Students also are introduced to the world of advanced manufacturing studying topics that include basic manufacturing materials and processes, tools, and techniques.  As progression continues, students will be introduced to manufacturing materials, testing, and material science.  They will understand industrial safety, work-flow, and product development.  Students will produce simple products and be allowed to construct and conduct experiments with various manufacturing materials.  Students can earn the MIOSHA safety credential and Mid Michigan College training credential.

    CTE Agricultural Science

    CTE Automotive

    Students will learn to diagnose problems involving a car’s electrical and electronic systems, brakes, engine performance, suspension, and steering.  Skill development focuses on repair of drums, disc, hydraulic, power assist and anti-lock brakes, as well as electrical systems.  Applied skills include math, communications, technology, and teamwork in a professional setting.  Students will test to earn the ASE Student certifications for maintenance and light repair, brakes, and electric.

    Students learn the art and technology of joining metals together with heat, using special equipment to perform different welding processes such as oxy-fuel cutting and brazing, gas metal arc, and shielded metal arc welding.  They also learn to accurately fabricate projects, read blueprints, repair broken parts, problem solve, and use math and measurement skills to set up and lay out parts used in welding projects.  Students can earn their MIG, TIG, STICK, and SENSE 1 certifications.

    8th Grade COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
    (8*** codes)
    Eighth Grade ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science meet for all three trimesters.  Students select one (1) elective per trimester in addition to their core classes. 

    8th ELA (Required): 
    This course is designed to improve the students reading and writing capabilities. We will read a number of books together as a class and work on students comprehension and reading fluency. They will also read weekly on their own. Student will need to write several papers to improve their writing skills. 

    8th Math - PreAlgebra (Required): 
    This course builds upon basic skill concepts in middle school and introduces Algebraic concepts. Students will study Rational and Irrational numbers, order of operations, solving equations, solving systems of equations, functions, and geometry concepts. Students will develop and expand problem solving skills and will think creatively and analytically. Students will use manipulatives and calculators starting in Course B. Successful completion of this course will ensure success in Algebra A/B.

    8th Social Studies (Required): 
    In Eighth Grade Social Studies, students focus on the history of the United States beginning with the Pre-Revolutionary War Era and concluding with the Civil War and Reconstruction.  A review of United States colonization, revolution, and independence is followed by an in-depth study of the establishment of our nation, principles of the United States Constitution, western expansion, social reform movements, and the Civil War and Reconstruction. 

    8th Science (Required): 
    In Eighth Grade Science, students focus on the History of Earth, Earth and Space Systems, Weather and Climate, and Human Sustainability.  Students will participate in classroom discussions, work together collaboratively in groups, and perform laboratory assignments.

    8th Art (Elective):  This course introduces students to a wide variety of art making concepts and techniques in a full range of art media.  Students will be able to explore these concepts through individual experiences.

    8th Advanced Art (Elective)*: 
    Prerequisite:  8th Art. 
    This course is a continuation of the beginning skills learned in 8th Art.  Students will continue to create projects and expand on concepts in a wide variety of art genres and expand on the history of art through class lecture and discussion.

    8th Band (Elective): 
    Prerequisite:  Member of 7th Band and/or Instructor Permission. 
    8th  Grade Band continues to build upon the fundamentals of music taught throughout Middle School.  It provides a large instrumental ensemble for students to experience all aspects relative to the performance of varying levels of band music.  Performances will be scheduled throughout the year.

    8th Computers (Elective). 
    Note:  Covers H.S. .5 Computer Requirement. 
    8th Computers in an introductory computer course that focuses on improving touch-typing skills.  In addition, students will gain experience using Microsoft Word features and shortcuts to format a variety of documents (memos, business letters, and academic reports).  NOTE:  Students must maintain computer privileges according to the district’s acceptable use policy to successfully complete this course.

    8th Drama* (Elective): 
    This introductory course offers students opportunities to act and perform in front of an audience.  Students will learn about acting choices, terminology, and the process of becoming a character.  They will also be introduced to the “behind the scenes” avenues of a drama production.

    8th Exploratory (Elective)*: 
    8th Grade Exploratory allows students to touch upon a variety of areas including basic speech/drama, woods, and physical education.  Students will have mini units in a variety of categories to help better prepare them for their elective choices in high school.

    8th Guided Academics (Special Education Students Only):
    Prerequisite:  IEP Mandated.
    8th Guided Academics is provided to help special education students with their other academic course work and improve study skills.  Note:  8th Guided Academics can be taken in more than one trimester.

    8th Physical Education (Elective):
    This course will focus on physical fitness as well as skill development in a unit structure. Students will need to dress in appropriate physical fitness attire on a daily basis. Students will do the Fitness Gram Pacer test as well as other aspects of physical fitness. Students will also take a fitness based final exam for the course.  Note:  8th  PE can be taken in more than one trimester.

    8th Service Learning (Elective):
    This course gives the student the opportunity to grow academically, pre-professionally, personally and civically through participation in a service-learning experience. Students meet real needs in the community by applying knowledge from their course.

    8th Woods (Elective):
    This is a middle school exploratory course on household and woodshop safety. Students will learn the importance of good safety habits and learn about tools used in a woodshop. The students will work on projects either as partners or in small groups.

    Choir* (Elective). 
    Note:  Students enrolled in 8th Choir join the high school choir and earn .5 credit per trimester.  These credits apply towards the visual performing arts credit required for graduation.   
    All students in choir are required to participate in ALL performances including concerts, festivals, and performances.  A significant part of the grade given from the course is based on the student’s participation in said activities.  Course goals are as follows:  to learn proper singing technique, enhance each student’s ability to work as a functioning member of a team, to learn music fundamentals, develop strong sight-singing skills, and to expose students to high quality choral literature.

    Health*
    Note:  Permission only with grades of B or Better.  These students are part of the ninth grade Health course and earn the .5 credit required for graduation.
    Health is a required class discussing topics such as: mental, social, physical health, safety, stress management, nutrition, drugs, alcohol, tobacco and human sexuality.

    Spanish 1 A/B*
    Note:  Students that take Spanish in 8th grade earn the 1.0 first year 
    world language credit required for graduation.                  
    Currently, Hispanics are the largest minority in the United States and we are the third largest Spanish-speaking country in the world: being bilingual and bicultural is an important job skill.  In addition, Spanish is the second most important language in international business and is spoken by about 500 million people in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.  This course begins the study of Spanish language and culture by developing the communicative modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.  The study of cultural practices, history, and geography of Spanish-speaking peoples continues as students develop basic grammar structure, vocabulary, and conversational skills in the present tense.  Students will be expected to communicate on a variety of topics in Spanish and use English as infrequently as possible.  In addition, this course will strive to heighten the student’s bicultural awareness of the Hispanic cultures within the United States and around the world through textbook readings, music, supplemental materials, and the study of current events.
