    The counseling department assists students in four areas of guidance:
    • Guidance Curriculum - Present structured experiences through individual, group, and classroom activities.
    • Individual Planning - Assist students in the planning, monitoring, and management of their own learning as well as personal and career development.
    • Responsive Services - Provide support and activities to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students.
    • Systems Support- Manage activities that establish, maintain, and enhance the total guidance and counseling program.

    Counseling Announcements for October 2019:

    FAFSA and TIP: FAFSA for the 2020-2021 academic year opened on October 1, 2019. To learn more, go to https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa.  TIP eligible students need to create an account and complete the application process before the deadline.     FAFSA Individual Meetings and FAFSA Completion Workshop opportunities: A financial aid officer from Mid Michigan College will be at FHS on October 24 during parent teacher conferences to assist students and their families with the completion of the FAFSA.  Appointment times are approximately 30 minutes each and are on a pre-registration basis.  See or call Mrs. Rohdy (588-9913 ext. 4111) to select your time frame.  The appointments run from 1:00-3:15 and again from 4:30-6:45.  Mid Michigan College is also hosting FAFSA workshops on Mondays at the Mt.     College Recruiters: Northern Michigan University will be at FHS on Tuesday, October 22, @ 12:30 p.m.  Any junior or senior interested in meeting with NMU, please sign up outside the counseling office door.

    Scholarship/Recognition Opportunities:  

    • Prudential Spirit of Community Award:  This award is open to students in grades 5-12 who have participated in a volunteer activity within the past year.  Honors are granted at the local, state, and national level.  To apply, students should do the following by November 5:  Find the application at https://spirit.prudential.com/.  Complete the application and student/parent agreement.  Go to certification tab and email your certifier.  The application can be certified by a middle or high school principal, the head of a county 4-H organization, Girl Scout council, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA, or Points of Light Global Network member.  
    • J. Ranck Electric Inc. Scholarship:  J. Ranck Electric, Inc. is offering five $500 scholarships (per year) to those entering a construction-based skilled trades education/training program.  Preference will be given to those entering the electrical field and relatives of JRE employees.  Application will be accepted until the deadline of December 31, 2019.  The application can be completed online at https://www.jranck.com/scholarship/.  
    • Clare County Chapter Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel Scholarship:  The Clare County Chapter of MARSP is offering one $400 scholarship to a graduating high school senior that will be attending a college/university full time in the 2020-2021 school year. Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher gpa. All applicants must complete the printed application (available in the h.s. counseling office) which includes a list of extra-curricular activites, community service activities, and a description of the applicant's program of study at a higher education institution.  Brief essays on how the student plans to finance his/her education and use this scholarship along with a paragraph highlighting oneself and his/her future goals is also required.  The deadline to complete this application is December 20, 2019.  

    CareerQuest: All 8th -10th graders will be attending CareerQuest on October 30 at SVSU. This is an interactive, hands-on career and college-readiness event. For more information, go to https://www.michiganworks.com/introducing-micareerquest-middle-michigan/

    Parchment Account Set-Up for Class of 2020: All seniors will need to set up a Parchment account this fall. Farwell High School has partnered with Parchment to order transcripts and other credentials securely. Transcripts for college applications, employment, and scholarships will be requested through your Parchment account. Go to https://www.parchment.com/u/registration/13975/account  to create your account today.

     Class of 2019 Top in the County for FAFSA and TIP Applications

    According to MI Student Aid Data as of July 1, 2019:

    • 65.5% of FHS seniors filed the 2019-20 FAFSA
      Only 50.5% of Clare County seniors filed the 2019-20 FAFSA
    • 93.6% of FHS TIP eligible seniors completed their required TIP application
      Only 78.4% of Clare County TIP eligible seniors completed the required TIP application

    Transitional Living Program
    Have you -

    • Become homeless because you've been left behind?
    • Ran away from abuse at home? Eviction notice?
    • Aged out of foster care or court ordered placement?

    The Transitional Living Program (TLP) helps older, homeless youth between 16-21 years old in the Isabella/Clare County areas who are unable to return to their homes (including pregnant and parenting teens) with guidance, help finding housing and a range of services for up to 18 months to succeed on their own.
